New Blood

New Blood brought together six artists from the Scottish Borders to celebrate the Year of Young People 2018.

Their art educational journey started at Borders College, where the ‘Foundation’ course in Art & Design aims to be a pivotal point in transition from the time restrictions of the school curriculum to the open-ended self-motivated study of a degree programme. It is where they discover anything is possible; that experimentation, risk taking and failure is part and parcel of the process in trying to find their ‘voice’. The six artists taking part demonstrate the wealth of contemporary talent currently emerging from Scotland’s Art Colleges. They are all at different stages of their journey, current undergraduates in years 2, 3 and 4 and those that have recently graduated at HND, BA (Hons) and MFA levels of study. The works on show involve a variety of subject matter utilising different media. What they have in common is a desire to create, to seek out ways of communicating their personal ‘voice’ and in taking the time to reflect on the imagery in the show, it is my belief that the viewer will hear this ‘voice’ and find the experience enriching.

This was a project initiated by CABN Visual Arts Advocate Niall Campbell, who is also Lecturer in Art & Design at Borders College. Niall was keen to present work by young and emerging artists who had studied at Borders College then moved on to study at one of the national art colleges. The exhibition at Hawick Museum was accompanied by a series of talks and workshops and was a hugely inspiring presentation of work by unique new voices from the region.
