Writing a Review – A Practical Workshop with Mary Brennan
Project Date: 5 September 2015 –
This was a wonderful opportunity to spend a day with Mary Brennan, one of Scotland’s most respected performance critics and a regular writer for the Herald for the past 25 years. Participants were given a point-by-point guide to critical practice from hints on note taking through to structuring review copy and there was some writing in real-time as part of the workshop.
The workshop was suitable for anyone of 14 years or over interested in developing skills in critical writing and the reviewing of dance and theatre performances. It was open to everyone from beginners to published writers.
Following on from the workshop there were opportunities to put what was learned into practice reviewing performances programmed by Borders Live Touring.
Some feedback from attendees:
A great opportunity to benefit from Mary’s wit, wisdom and words!
A really good workshop that develops your reviewing abilities and writing skills. Mary is a great teacher and as a plus has great stories!
