CABN Small Grant Fund Helps Borders Artist Advance Glass Painting Practice

Thanks to support from CABN (Creative Arts Business Network) Borders-based artist Georgia Collins has been able to take a significant step forward in her creative journey, developing specialist skills in the traditional craft of stained glass painting.

In May, with the help of a CABNs Small Grant Fund, Georgia travelled to Medbourne, Leicestershire, to attend an intensive two-day masterclass led by renowned stained glass artist Derek Hunt. The workshop provided an invaluable opportunity to deepen her understanding of kiln-fired glass painting techniques, learning new methods of shading, line work, and the use of silver stain to create vibrant amber hues.

“Without this grant, I wouldn’t have been able to make the journey, stay overnight, or attend this incredible opportunity,” said Georgia. “The workshop has made a huge impact on my practice and allowed me to develop my skills in a supportive and creative environment. I am very grateful for CABN’s support.”

Since attending the masterclass, Georgia has continued to refine her skills, experimenting with glass enamels alongside traditional techniques. This has already led to a major commissioned stained glass panel, featuring a hand-painted kiln-fired cheetah and peacock, which will be installed in September. She is also planning a new collection of hand-painted glass panels and suncatchers to showcase at future art events, with the long-term goal of exhibiting at the Borders Art Fair.

“The techniques I’ve learned will allow me not only to create more detailed and customised work for clients but also to take on future repair and restoration of painted stained glass panels,” Georgia added.
